Drawn to dark cultural events? Brit Sarah Kane’s final play before her 1998 suicide is a "dark and poetic tour de force." Using lucid dialogue, two characters, fragmented scenes and a stream-of-consciousness style, she magnifies the anguish of madness before the heroine lets go of light at 4:48 AM, said to be the time when most suicides take place. A time when those suffering mental disorders report feeling very clear and cold, while those outside perceive them to be in their deepest delirium. If you've grown weary of monasteries and pubs, this shudder-inducing exposure of the human mind is a black-box production with lasting impact. Above-stage-subtitles distract slightly, but it's the price we monolinguals pay. I saw it in Sofia, but you can catch it this June at the Rondo Theater in Bath, UK. Check out this good review.
