Cut Cabinet: Francesco Cappuccio

Francesco Cappuccio is at it again folks. You may remember his Canvas Coffee Table I wrote about a little while ago. Well, Francesco is morphing art into furniture once again– this time his inspiration was Lucio Fontana’s 1966 piece entitled “Attesa” (pictured above, center). Francesco was drawn to the way Fontana physically “attacked, pierced, and lacerated the canvas in an attempt to discover what lies beneath.” What does lie beneath? To Francesco, “a gaping emptiness of immateriality.” In his new Cut Cabinet, he applies Fontana’s idea of the free development of color and form in real space to create an art that would transcend the area of the canvas to become an integral part of architecture— the result: some deeply inspired handles for his “cut” cabinet design.
